Born to Light
It will soon become a year that no one will forget and we will tell our children and grandchildren about, the year of COVID-19.
My family as well as every family in the world was under quarantine orders. As with anyone we started to get restless but we were cautious and wanted to be smart returning to normal. I started to get especially restless.
I had many trips planned for the year and we were smack in the middle of the first when everything got really bad. We were in Alabama and when we got back we did not travel for quite some time. In fact I found it hard to justify traveling as all of my income had dried up as well as most other business owners.
When things started to finally look better I started planning. We decided to go to a place we are very familiar with, Frisco, CO. Before we got to Frisco I wanted to take a few days and stay in my van on some old forestry roads.
My wife and I have a daughter, Aspen, and we decided it would be fun too stop in Aspen and she could see the city. Now I know what you are thinking and no, she wasn’t named after Aspen, CO but rather after aspen trees.
Near Aspen is the Maroon Bells, an iconic sight I have personally visited many times. We wanted to take our daughters on a hike up from Maroon Lake to Crater Lake. I decided that we would be getting up very early and arrive before sunrise so that we could all enjoy the alpine-glow that often hits the peaks in the morning.
As the sun started to come up behind us you could see the peaks get color and it just kept glowing more and more intensely. It was a spectacular morning and I am so happy I was able to capture this image!
Yes I do have other shots from past trips horizontally with is a very striking perspective… Which is why that is almost all you will ever see taken here. I wanted something different, as is what I always strive for. The trees and rocks in the foreground gave me just what I needed to do a vertical orientation and the wind stayed calm enough for the reflection to be spectacular!
