Back in July I packed my van and hit the road for an art show in Aspen, CO.

When I departed Iowa I had mixed feelings about the trip.  I was going to one of my favorite locations in Colorado but I was leaving behind my wife and kids, whom I was hoping would have been able to join me.

When I arrived in Aspen, I scouted out the art fair location.  It had been moved from past years with the promise of much better foot traffic, as sales in previous years were known to not have been good.  Seeing the location, I was extremely disappointed.

My spirits were low. I actually thought about simply heading home and not worrying about the show at all.

I stayed; after all I had far too much money invested at that point to simply abandon the show.

Arriving at my campsite I was greeted with a moose and my spirits were high again!

That evening and each morning and evening of the show I visited the Maroon Bells.  There was little else to do and I really enjoy spending time in the park.

One particular morning I decided to actually try and get a good shot, the others I had simply enjoyed what was around me and the conditions were not favorable.

I walked past the crowd to the far end of the lake where I had scouted a particular beautiful stand of wildflowers the evening before.  Though I was not actually shooting where the wildflowers were, I was close by.

I kept an eye on the mountain range and saw that nothing was going to happen and the sky was very boring. Clouds started to form behind me; this meant not glow on the peaks this morning, but the potential for a nice sunrise.

I grabbed my gear and headed to where the wildflowers were!

As the sun came up, she sky exploded with color and I was greatly rewarded with this shot!  After the sky died down, I grabbed my gear and headed back to my van; walking past all of the people still photographing the mountains, none the wiser as to what just happened behind them!

The art show turned out to be a complete waste of time.  I broke even, literally to the dollar.  That is another story and or review for another time.

I did however walk away with this incredible shot that I would not have had if I didn’t get up early each morning and put in the time!

Ethereal is available as a limited edition of 25.
